Some trips call for quiet pools, long dinners and nobody cannonballing next to your lounge chair. That's what adults-only hotels are for, and Banderas Bay has one for nearly every style: all-inclusive resorts perched above the coast, intimate beachfront boutiques, lively spots in the Romantic Zone, a yoga retreat you can only reach by boat and even a luxury tented camp in the jungle of Punta Mita.
Here are nine of the best-known adults-only hotels in the area, with their backstories, design and standout features, plus what their ratings mean, when to go and how to choose.
Why choose an adults-only resort in Puerto Vallarta?
Adults-only properties are designed for couples, honeymooners, anniversary trips and groups of friends who want either peace and quiet or a social scene without kids' programs. In Puerto Vallarta the minimum age is usually 18, but every hotel sets its own policy, so check it before you book.
The bay's neighborhoods feel very different from one another:
- South shore: jungle-covered hills tumbling into the sea, coves and big views (Hotel Mousai, and Xinalani farther south).
- Romantic Zone: the old neighborhood south of the Cuale River, walkable and packed with restaurants, galleries and bars; the heart of Vallarta's LGBTQ+ life.
- 5 de Diciembre: between downtown and the hotel zone, close to the Malecón.
- Marina Vallarta: a planned community with a marina and golf course, right by the airport.
- Punta Mita (Nayarit): a peninsula with water on three sides and top-tier resorts.
From guesthouses to luxury retreats: a little history
Vallarta's hotel scene is young. The city's first formal hotel, the Hotel Rosita, opened in 1948 with just three rooms at the end of the Malecón. Everything changed in 1963, when John Huston shot The Night of the Iguana at Mismaloya. Richard Burton arrived with Elizabeth Taylor, and the international press put this fishing village on the map. Get the full story in The Night of the Iguana in Puerto Vallarta.
The international airport opened in 1970, and big hotels followed. From the 1980s on, Canadian and American retirees and members of the gay community bought homes south of the Cuale River and opened businesses, creating today's Romantic Zone. Marina Vallarta broke ground in 1986, and in 1999 the Four Seasons opened in Punta Mita, turning the peninsula into a byword for luxury.
The couples-only resort has a history of its own. One of the names most associated with it is Sandals, the chain Jamaican entrepreneur Gordon "Butch" Stewart founded in 1981 in Montego Bay with all-inclusive resorts for couples. Around Banderas Bay, that model now shares the stage with boutiques, design-forward residences and wellness retreats where calm is the whole promise.

Diamonds, stars and Keys: what the ratings mean
- AAA Diamonds: anonymous inspectors make unannounced visits to rated hotels every year. Four Diamond means upscale lodging with high-end amenities; Five Diamond means a luxury experience with superior service.
- Forbes Travel Guide Stars: the guide began in 1958 as the Mobil Travel Guide, the oldest travel guide in the U.S. Its anonymous inspectors award Five-Star, Four-Star or "Recommended."
- MICHELIN Keys: the MICHELIN Guide published its first hotel selection for Mexico in 2024. Inspectors weigh design, service, personality, value for money and contribution to the setting. A hotel can be "selected" without earning a Key.

Rooms range from about 450 sq ft to a roughly 1,390 sq ft Master Suite with Jacuzzis inside and out; the Honeymoon Suite has a terrace with a Jacuzzi and hammocks.
What makes it special: romance is the whole point, from the welcome massage to the optional "Gourmet All Inclusive" plan and three à la carte restaurants. Its restaurant, La Corona, has received a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its wine list. According to its official site, the hotel holds a AAA Four Diamond rating and trains staff with the British Butler Institute.
Best for: honeymoons and anniversaries right in the city.
Almar Resort Luxury LGBT Beachfront Experience
In the Romantic Zone, Almar calls itself the only luxury gay hotel in the neighborhood, and it's adults-only. It's beachfront, with two towers, Almar and Mantamar, linked to the Eden Pool & Lounge Garden, a guests-only pool garden.

Right on Los Muertos Beach, Blue Chairs is a Romantic Zone classic: 18 and over, inclusive and LGBTQ+ friendly, with 85 rooms. One stretch of this beach is popularly known as "the blue chairs beach." Its rooftop is famous for drag shows featuring local performers and a Sunday drag brunch, and there's also a pool, spa, restaurant and beach club.
Best for: travelers who want a festive scene and the beach without leaving the neighborhood. Find more options in our guide to Romantic Zone hotels.
Casa Doña Susana
A few steps from the pier, Casa Doña Susana is a small, romantic adults-only hotel where every room has its own décor. There's a pool in a palapa-shaded courtyard and a rooftop terrace with a bar and pool, where dinner comes with an ocean view. Guests can use the restaurant, beach club and spa of its sister hotel, Playa Los Arcos, half a block away: small-hotel intimacy with big-hotel amenities.
Best for: couples who want a charming hotel steps from the beach.
Chic by Pinnacle 179
Also in the Romantic Zone, this Pinnacle Resorts building is for guests 18 and over. It has 34 designer residences and two penthouses with modern interiors and private terraces, some with Jacuzzis, two blocks from Los Muertos Beach and about 10 minutes from the Malecón.

Xinalani
Farther south, on a beach reachable only by boat, Xinalani is an adults-only retreat devoted to yoga and wellness. Its 33 rooms are open-air, palm-thatched cabins, with jungle yoga studios, a spa and a temazcal, the traditional pre-Hispanic sweat lodge. The MICHELIN Guide awarded it Three Keys, its highest distinction.
Best for: travelers looking for yoga, nature and total quiet.
An adults-only resort in Riviera Nayarit: Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort
Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort
On the Punta Mita peninsula, Naviva opened in 2022 as Four Seasons' first luxury tented resort in the Americas. There are just 15 tents across roughly 48 acres of jungle by the sea. It's all-inclusive and adults-only, and Forbes Travel Guide rates it Four-Star.
Design: the tents were designed by Luxury Frontiers, a firm specializing in safari-style architecture. Each is about 1,250 sq ft, with a plunge pool, outdoor shower, deep soaking tub and hammocks; bathrooms feature locally hewn stone and handicrafts.
What makes it special: there are no set menus or rigid schedules. At Copal Cocina, led by chef Sofia Mojica, Mexican meals are built around you, and every guest gets a dedicated guide who shapes the itinerary: snorkeling, agave spirits tastings or sound healing. A fun fact: bottled water is pulled from the humid jungle air through a partnership with Source Water. The resort's beach is rocky, so guests swim at the Four Seasons next door.
Best for: couples who want to fully unplug. See also our guide to Punta Mita luxury hotels.
Adults-only spaces at family resorts: Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita has the Tamai pool, the St. Regis Punta Mita has its Sakana pool, and Barceló Puerto Vallarta, at Mismaloya, has an adults-only pool.
We recommend confirming hours, rates, age policies and availability directly with each hotel.
